Locomotive Roster for Weekend 18th & 19th August and weekdays to 24th August 2018

This weekend BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 will head steam services on Saturday having put in sterling effort throughout the week.

However, the locomotive retires at the end of the day to be replaced by USATC S160 2-8-0 5820 for the last round trip of the day and then heading the evening’s Haworth Haddock dining train. 5820 then continues on Sunday and will haul 6 coach trains throughout the week.

On Sunday there will be an rare appearance on a service train of the National Trust’s LNWR 0-6-2T ‘Coal Tank’ 1054, courtesy of the Bahamas Locomotive Society at Ingrow, hauling a 3 suburban set of coaches plus the NER ‘Old Gentleman’s Saloon’ which has been hired for a private party.

The diesel services on Saturday will be handled by our Class 101 diesel multiple unit.

On Saturday the first train departs Oxenhope (diesel railcar) at 09.00 with steam locomotive hauled trains operating from 11.00 and on Sunday, the first passenger service is steam hauled at 10.15.

In addition the vintage tour bus will be in operation every day.

Timetables:
Saturday- Green
Sunday – Blue
Weekend – Bus Timetable
Weekday – Orange (train and bus)

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 11th & 12th August and weekdays to 17th August 2018

This weekend BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 will head steam services on both days and will continue throughout the week, completing a 7 day operating stint.

On Sunday there will be an interesting pairing harking back to the last steam hauled services on the branch in BR days. In addition to 75078 on the main service train, it will be joined by Ivatt 2-6-2T 41241 hauling just 3 coaches reminiscent of services in 1950s as depicted here of classmate 41273 on a Keighley – Oxenhope push-pull train standing at Oxenhope ready to return northwards. In 2018 however the ex-LMS coaches will be replaced by 3 suburban coaches, making an interesting contrast to the corridor coaches behind 75078

The diesel services on Saturday will be handled by our Class 101 diesel multiple unit.

On Saturday the first train departs Oxenhope (diesel railcar) at 09.00 with steam locomotive trains operating from 11.00 and on Sunday, the first passenger service is steam hauled at 10.15.

50th Anniversary DVD

For the glorious sunny days from the 24th June to the 1st July, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway celebrated in style with the most spectacular Gala the Railway has ever brought to the public.

The 8-day long Gala featured several different events with 9 steam locomotives and 9 diesel locomotives operating on various days, allowing each day to celebrate a different piece of history and achievement of our pioneering Railway.

Running for over 100 minutes, this DVD, brought to you by the renowned railway video team at Steaming Around Yorkshire, is an all action packed tribute to the spectacle the Railway volunteers were proud to bring to this beautiful valley in West Yorkshire.

Here’s a short taster

Priced at £12.95, the video is available from the station shops, order by email shop@kwvr.co.uk or call 01535 640464.

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 28th & 29th July and weekdays to 3rd August 2018

These last few weeks have emphasised the difficulty of advising, in advance, the locomotives to be rostered for our services, and never has the disclaimer at the foot of these notifications been more appropriate.

The fire risk continues and our trackside is still tinder dry, resulting in the Railway, reluctantly, replacing Thursday’s steam locomotive with one of our diesels but, as yet, there is no blanket steam ban on the KWVR and steam passenger services continue whenever possible.

This weekend, with the usual disclaimer, will have ‘Big Jim’, USATC S160 2-8-0 5820,  at the head of steam services on both days and will continue with the weekday service.

On Sunday 5820 and will be joined by Ivatt 2-6-2T 41241 on our Sunday Vintage Train service. However conditions were favourable last weekend for the preferred locomotive, LNWR ‘Coal Tank’ 0-6-2T 1054 to head the Vintage Train. These are tricky times and we ask for understanding if the advertised locomotive is substituted.

The diesel service this Saturday will be locomotive hauled with our monthly Diesel & Ale train running throughout Saturday alongside our steam hauled service. This will be hauled by Class 37, 37 075.

On Saturday (Green Diesel & Ale Timetable) the first train departs Oxenhope (diesel) at 09.00 with steam locomotive trains operating from 11.00 and on Sunday (Blue Vintage Train Timetable), the first passenger service is steam hauled at 10.15.

Throughout the week the Orange Timetable operates (Monday – Friday) with the first service leaving Oxenhope at 10.00 The Orange Timetable includes the Haworth – Oxenhope tour bus which, on dry days, will be provided by an open top double decker for unrivalled views of the local countryside.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 21st & 22nd July and weekdays to 27th July 2018

Firstly, an apology for the non-appearance of the roster for last weekend and the current week. Due to the ongoing fire risk plus outstanding repairs it was not possible to post the roster in advance.

Despite rain in the last week the fire risk continues and our trackside is still tinder dry but, unlike the ‘big’ railway, there is no steam ban on the KWVR and steam passenger services continue.

This weekend BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 will head steam services on both days and footplate crews being urged to drive steam locomotives sympathetically to the conditions. With a 6 coach train on Saturday and with conditions in mind these trains will be “banked” by English Electric 0-6-0 diesel D0226 ‘Vulcan’.

On Sunday 75078 continues alone on a 5 coach formation and will be joined by Ivatt 2-6-2T 41241 on the our Sunday Vintage Train service. Conditions are still too dry to roster LNWR 0-6-2T 1054 which is less powerful than the Ivatt.

The diesel services on Saturday will be handled by our Class 101 diesel multiple unit.

On Saturday (Green Timetable) the first train departs Oxenhope (diesel railcar) at 09.00 with steam locomotive trains operating from 11.00 and on Sunday (Blue Vintage Train Timetable), the first passenger service is steam hauled at 10.15.

This week sees the introduction of the Orange Timetable (Monday – Friday) with the first service leaving Oxenhope at 10.00 hauled by BR ‘Ivatt Tank’ 2-6-2T 41241, resplendent in  its KWVR / LMS crimson lake re-opening livery, and this locomotive will continue throughout the week. The Orange Timetable hails the introduction of the Haworth – Oxenhope tour bus which, on dry days will be provided by an open top double decker for unrivalled views of the local countryside.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 7th & 8th July and weekdays to 13th July 2018

With the hot weather continuing and our trackside tinder dry, it has been a challenging week for the Railway, but, there is no steam ban on the KWVR and steam passenger services continue, but this weekend with a little help from the rear.

This weekend BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 will head steam services on both days as footplate crews are urged to drive steam locomotives sympathetically to the conditions. With this in mind these trains will be “banked” by BR Class 20 diesel 20 031.

This pairing continues on Sunday when we will also have the second of our vintage Sundays which this weekend will be headed by MR 4F 0-6-0 43924.

Weekday has the Pink timetable in use with the first service leaving Oxenhope at 10.00 and after a successful return at our 50th Anniversary Gala these services will be hauled by BR ‘Ivatt Tank’ 2-6-2T 41241, resplendent in  its KWVR / LMS crimson lake re-opening livery, the first time the ‘Ivatt’ has operated a service train since restoration.

50th Anniversary Gala Update

We are delighted to announce a further visiting steam locomotives, one returning home and an additional mainline diesel for the 8 day Gala.

Southern Railway ‘West Country’ Pacific 34092 ‘City of Wells’

We’re delighted to share with you the news that 34092 ‘City of Wells’ will return this Summer – for our 50th Anniversary in June. Thanks go to the current owners, life long and KWVR founding Members, who have made the Loco available for the last time under their ownership.

Although based on the KWVR since being rescued from Barry scrapyard in the 1970s ‘City of Wells’ was never a suitable locomotive for a short, steep 5 mile branch line. Having been marooned at Bury due to bridge problems in Keighley, the ELR were able to make greater use of the locomotive whilst in their care, than would be the case on the KWVR. The private owners of the locomotive made the decision to pass this superbly restored ex-Southern Pacific onto new owners and, as the ELR is more suited to it, are in the process of selling ‘City of Wells’ to the East Lancashire Railway at Bury.

It is with great pleasure therefore that we welcome 34092 to its spiritual home for one last time in the original owners care.

LMS Class 5MT ‘Black 5’ 4-6-0 45212

Returning for the first time since it returned to traffic in 2017, the KWVR’s very own ‘Black 5’, 45212, is making a brief appearance in between mainline duties. As part of the agreement with Ian Riley Engineering to restore 45212 to mainline condition, the KWVR had use of the locomotive, or another member of the class, at various time during the year. Ian Riley’s sister locomotive 44871, spent few months over the Christmas period in lieu of 45212.

45212 was one of the first locomotives to arrive on the line after re-opening, being purchased straight out of service when steam traction ceased on British Railways, having had the distinction of heading the final steam hauled revenue earning service on August 4th 1968.

Class 50 English Electric Type 4 50 035 ‘Ark Royal’

Class 50, 50 035 Ark Royal, has been confirmed as attending our 50th Anniversary courtesy of our friends at ‘The Class 50 Alliance Ltd”.

The class were initially introduced for services north of Crewe, prior to electrification of the Crewe – Glasgow section of the West Coast main line. As 45212 was being withdrawn, D435 (as initially numbered) was being released into traffic from the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows. In the re-numbering system of the 1970s D435 became 50 035 in 1974 and was named ‘Ark Royal’ in 1978,

Withdrawn in 1990, 50 035 was purchased by the 50 Fund. Based on the Severn Valley Railway, it is now owned by the ‘Class 50 Alliance’, an amalgamation between the 50 Fund and Project Defiance. The group now owns 4 members of the class.

50 035 was the first Class 50 to be preserved and the Class is also celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year. This is the locomotives first visit to the Railway and will feature on Saurday 30th June and Sunday 1st July as part of our 50th Anniversary Mixed traffic and Diesel Days.

These positions are offered at either the National Minimum or Living Wage dependent upon the age of the applicant on a Zero Hours contract.

The diesel service will be in the capable hands of our Class 101 diesel multiple unit which will also be on duty on the Wednesday railcar service. Seen as a “modern” form of rail travel, this class of diesel unit was itself introduced over 60 years ago.

First train departs Oxenhope (diesel railcar) at 09.00 with 5820 operating from 11.00 and on Sunday, the first passenger service is steam hauled at 10.15, 5820 working a two train service with the diesel railcar.

Tour de Yorkshire – 6th May 2018

Sunday, 6 May 2018 – Stage 4 of the Tour de Yorkshire 2018 passes through Oxenhope, Haworth, Oakworth and Laycock.

Road closures will be in place to facilitate the event passing through the district, which is anticipated to be between 12.43 (Hebden Bridge) and 13.10 Goose Eye.

This year the race comes down from Oxenhope Moor and continues along the A6033 Keighley Road before dropping down Brow Road, over the Railway and up Haworth Main Street. Haworth and Oxenhope Stations are not featured this year, the only contact the race has with the Railway this year is crossing over the tracks on Bridgehouse Lane, adjacent to Haworth Yard.

Visitors to the Railway will face minimum disruption but need to be aware of potential road closures as the race passes through. Alternatively, park in Keighley or at Ingrow and let the train take the strain.

For details of the Day 4 of the Tour de Yorkshire, visit the dedicated website >>>.
