Station Gardens Part 2 – Haworth

Two weeks ago we published the first of our posts highlighting the hard work that goes on to give our station gardens the colourful appearance that our visitors see throughout the spring and summer. Our first foray into the undergrowth reflected the work that Sue & Kathryn put in to make Oxenhope gardens reflect the importance of our terminus station.

Moving north, Haworth is our next station stop, where Tom Kemp is bringing the garden along and Jason and Thomas are attacking the wilderness that surrounds it. Very much a work in progress, great steps have been taken with much more work to do. Click HERE to see the fruits of their labours.

Yorkshire in Bloom & the Station Gardens

For many years the Railway has been served by an enthusiastic team of gardeners that have kept our stations looking bright and beautiful in the Spring and Summer months.

And every year we are visited by the judges of Yorkshire in Bloom and this year was no different when the judges, seen above with the Railway’s David Petyt (far left) and Rebecca Ashworth (in the yellow dress) at Damems, visited the Railway on Wednesday 17th July, being given a tour of the Railway on board our Class 101 DMU.

And the gardening team are justifiably proud of their efforts, which in past years have been rewarded with awards in the annual Yorkshire in Bloom competition. The results of this year’s visit will not be known until the Autumn.

Whilst the team are very good at what they do, they are not very good at publicising the results of their labours, so we thought that it was about time that the hard work that goes into keeping the Railway’s gardens blooming, reached a wider audience.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be publishing an article about each station and what the gardens contain. This week step forward Sue & Kathryn who look after Oxenhope gardens. Click HERE to see the fruits of their labours.

Tracks Through Our Times

Here on the KWVR we are looking at the Railway’s rich past both in the preservation era and under British Railways and London Midland & Scottish Railways ownership.

Debbie Cross, the Railway’s Heritage Manager, is currently in the process of gathering material for a heritage project called ‘Tracks Through Our Times’, looking at the experiences of those using or working on the Railway prior to closure or those involved in the early years of the preservation movement.

Whether you are, or were, a local resident who used the line before the closure or volunteered in the early days when the line was being saved, we would like to hear from you. Debbie would like to interview people who have stories they would like to share of their experiences.

Already a request was put out through the Keighley News for the local community to come forward with their stories of travelling on the railway for work and leisure pre- and post preservation.

If you were a part of the early preservation team or have stories about some of the major milestones that make the railway what it is today, she would love to hear from you. These stories will be used across the railway within our future exhibitions, on our website and as an educational resource. We may even turn some of them into songs!

If you would like to volunteer to be interviewed, then please get in touch with Debbie by email – debbie.cross@kwvr.co.uk

Following on from my first article where I outlined the latest activities within Haworth Shed, this article is a continuation of that, as well as announcing the movements of locomotives returning and leaving the railway.
