Locomotive Roster for the weekend 19th & 20th January 2019

With the reduced number of passengers on our winter services our steam hauled services consist of 4 coaches, sufficient for Class 2 motive power, which this weekend will be BR ‘Ivatt’ Class 2MT 2-6-2 41241 with 5 round trips on Saturday, Green timetable, and 4 on Sunday to the Blue timetable.

Visitors should note that we are now operating to a revised Green timetable with the first Saturday diesel railcar service of the day departing from Haworth at 09.00 and not Oxenhope as in previous years. The diesel service will be operated on both days by our Class 101 diesel multiple unit.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Oxenhope Buffet Opening Hours

With the change of the times of the first train from Oxenhope, the Buffet opening times have been changed. The Buffet will open 30 minutes before the first train departs Oxenhope, ie 09.45

Advance Notice

As Winter bites and the News Editor advances in years, like our Summer birds, he is heading south for an extended break and a well earned (at least he thinks so) holiday of a lifetime. Unfortunately a replacement editor has not been trained up yet, so, reluctantly, you will not receive a locomotive roster update each week to your in-box. The last update will be for the weekend of the 26th & 27th January with normal service being resumed for the weekend of the 23rd & 24th March.

Fear not, however!

The weekly roster will be posted on the Home section of the website, so please look on the website for an update. Our marketing team are a busy lot with not enough hours in their day, but will hope to post the roster by the Thursday evening prior to the weekend.

Locomotive Roster for the weekend 5th & 6th January 2019

As we start a new year, we must first apologise for the lack of information regarding the locomotives in operation from the 28th December to the 1st January. Sadly our normally reliable jungle drums did not come up with their usual flow of information. Rumours that the drummer had had too much sherry over the Christmas period are totally unfounded, although this weekend’s drumbeat has come a little late.

With the failure of the rostered locomotive, MR 0-6-0 4F 43924, we have had a combination of motive power with 78022, 41241 and diesel 20 031 all rallying to the call, and on New Year’s Day we had the wonderful double headed combination of BR Standard Class 2 2-6-0 78022 and BR ‘Ivatt’ 2MT 2-6-2T 41241 (illustrated above and below) – a stirring sight of 2 locomotives that returned to service in 2018 bringing in the New Year. With the number of passenger we carry on our Mince Pie Specials, we need to run 6 coaches and with 78022 and 41241, the only alternative engines available, limited to 5 coaches, extra power is required if either of these locomotives were to be used. 20 031 assisted on the 31st December and the two Class 2 locomotives combined on 1st January in perfect Winter conditions as you can see below.

With the reduced number of passengers on our winter services, this weekend’s motive power will be BR ‘Ivatt’ Class 2MT 2-6-2T 41241 hauling 4 coaches with 5 round trips on Saturday, Green timetable, and 4 on Sunday to the Blue timetable.

Visitors should note that we are now operating to a revised Green timetable with the first Saturday diesel railcar service of the day departing from Haworth at 09.00 and not Oxenhope as in previous years. The diesel service will be operated on both days by our Class 101 diesel multiple unit.

Locomotive Roster for the 22nd – 28th December 2018

And so we come to the end of our Santa Steam Specials this weekend and despite some atrocious weather conditions, especially last Saturday, our volunteers have, once again, delivered a memorable visit for our passengers producing lots and lots of happy faces. As this is being written, the BBC Weather App is predicting more rain for the last 3 days of Santa Steam Specials but, in theory at least, the sun will be poking its nose out at various times.

This weekend’s combination of steam locomotives will be the same as last weekend’s. On Saturday and Sunday MR 4F 0-6-0 43924 will take our festive visitors south from Keighley and on Christmas Eve, BR Standard Class 2 2-6-0 78022 will have the honours of bringing the 2018 season of Santa Steam Specials to a close.  Both locomotives will be in steam on all 3 days, with the non-operation locomotive, on standby in Haworth Yard.

This weekend the diesel locomotive will be Class 20, 20 031 on both days.

For visitors without a Santa Steam Special ticket wishing to travel along the Worth Valley, a diesel railcar service operates throughout the day by our Class 101 diesel multiple unit, starting at 09.00, giving passengers a new perspective through the forward facing windows on our diesel railcars. This service is free of charge to Santa Special ticket holders.

Our volunteers only get one day’s respite before the Railway re-opens on Boxing Day with a week of Mince Pie Specials headed by MR 4F 0-6-0 43924.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Locomotive Roster for the Weekend 15th & 16th December 2018

Santa Steam Specials are running to capacity, and despite the poor weather conditions we have seen lots and lots of happy faces. This weekend has the possibility of some snow showers and if that combines with clear blue skies, you have the picture postcard Santa Specials.

This weekend, as with all Santa Steam Specials, trains will have a combination of locomotives, with steam locomotives operating on the south, Oxenhope end of the train, assisted by one of our mainline diesel locomotives at the Keighley end. Once again steam motive power will be provided by 2 locomotives. On Saturday, taking its first tour of Santa duty this year, will be MR 4F 0-6-0 43924 and on Sunday BR Class 2 2-6-0 78022 will have the honours.  Both locomotives will be in steam, with the non-operation locomotive, on standby in Haworth yard.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

‘BAHAMAS RAILTOUR 2’, Oxenhope to Carlisle 16th February 2019

Due to the huge success and quick sell out of the original 9th February ‘Bahamas’ Railtour, we have decided to launch a second tour date, just one week later, so that all of our wonderful enthusiasts are able to get the chance to enjoy one of 45596’s first mainline running in over 25 years!

LMS ‘Jubilee’ Class locomotive 45596 ‘Bahamas, was the first of the four Jubilees of the class to be preserved and occupies a special place in railway history as it was the very last steam engine to be modified by BR in its attempts to improve the performance of its steam fleet with the fitting of its unique double chimney and blastpipe in 1961. The Bahamas Locomotive Society (BLS) bought 45596 in 1967.

‘Bahamas’ ran on the main line (1989 – 1994) before retiring to Oxenhope Exhibition Shed in 1997. 45596 moved to Tyseley Locomotive Works in November 2013 as a result of the BLS’s successful £996k bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for help to give it the most extensive overhaul since 1961. 45596’s first steaming after its latest overhaul was on 27 September and, on its return to Ingrow, ‘Bahamas’ is about to operate on the main line once again.

Promoted by Keighley & Worth Valley Railway in partnership with Bahamas Locomotive Society, ‘Bahamas’ will run from Oxenhope to Carlisle and return on Saturday 16th February 2019.

Tickets are available to purchase online NOW! For more details and to book your ticket, click HERE to go to the main KWVR website.

Locomotive Roster for the Weekend 8th & 9th December 2018

The first Santa Steam Specials ran to capacity last weekend albeit in poor weather conditions but there were lots of smiling faces nonetheless. Hopefully this weekend will be a little better although some rain (hopefully not s much) is forecast

Throughout the Santa season, trains will have a combination of locomotives, with steam locomotives operating on the south, Oxenhope end of the train, assisted by one of our mainline diesel locomotives at the Keighley end. Steam motive power for the Santa Steam Specials will be provided by 2 locomotives, BR Class 2 2-6-0 78022 on Saturday (its 2nd day in passenger service after overhaul) and BR Ivatt 2-6-2T 41241, that hauled trains throughout last weekend, on Sunday.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Locomotive Roster for the Weekend 24th & 25th November 2018

For this, the last weekend of ‘normal’ timetabled running before Santa Steam Specials hit the Valley, we have delayed publishing the locomotive roster for this weekend pending the announcement regarding the availability of a new locomotive on the scene. Not having been in action for 17 years since withdrawal for overhaul, we are delighted to announce that our locomotive restoration team have advised us that Standard 4 Locomotive Society’s BR Standard Class  2 2-6-0 78022 will be hauling its inaugural passenger journey tomorrow (Saturday 24th November). Although not a livery carried in service with BR, 78022 looks resplendent in BR Brunswick Green, a livery normally carried, but not exclusively, by top link express locomotives.

At the time of publishing, it is likely that 78022 will not be in action on Sunday and Ivatt 2-6-2T 41241 will haul operate the steam service.

Diesel services over the weekend will be in the hands of our Class 101 DMU which starts proceedings on Saturday at 09.00 from Oxenhope.

The Winter Green timetable operates on Saturday and the Blue Winter timetable on Sunday.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power and coaching stock are available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Haworth Shop Closure 5th – 10th November

Those visiting Haworth Station will have noticed for some considerable time that the floor in the Booking Hall is uneven, the solid floor having taken a pounding over the years. The replacement of the floor is long overdue and we are pleased to announce that the old floor is being ripped up and a more ‘authentic’ Yorkstone slab floor is being laid as its replacement. The surface and substructure will be taken out and a concrete base laid on which the slabs will sit.

Accordingly, with the main running season behind us and the invasion that is Santa Steam Specials beginning on the 1st December, we are taking the opportunity to undertake the work in this quieter period. So from the 5th to 10th November 2018, Haworth shop will be closed during the work to relay the Booking Hall floor. Telephone sales will still be available, call 01535 640464 (11.00 to 16.00 Monday – Friday) or email shop@kwvr.co.uk.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to Haworth Station after the 10th, when you can stand and admire our handywork (and of course visit the shop).

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 27th & 28th October and midweek service, 30th & 31st October and 1st November 2018

With the forecast of icy winds coming down from the Arctic with the coldest weekend since April anticipated, we know that Winter, and therefore Santa Steam Specials, are only just around the corner. As well as weekend running, some schools are on holiday next week, so once again we are offering steam hauled services Tuesday – Thursday

The weekend timetables are the Green timetable on Saturday and the Winter Blue timetable on Sunday. Our midweek steam service which will operate to the Pink timetable.

The Class 101 diesel multiple unit will start the ball rolling at 09.00 on Saturday and the weekend’s steam service starts from Oxenhope at 11.00 with a 6 coach train hauled by BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078.  75078 and our Class 101 diesel multiple unit will continue with the two train service on Sunday.

The weekday service starts at 10.00 on Tuesday with Ivatt 2-6-2T 41241 operating 4 round trips with 4 coaches including the real ale buffet car.

Work on raising the north end of Haworth platform to the same height as the rest was completed in time for the Beer & Music Festival, so passengers will now be able to alight from trains without facing the large drop to the platform that has existed for far too many years.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power and coaching stock are available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Beer & Music Festival Transport Announcement

Late transport available from Keighley to Leeds on Saturday, 20th October at 2030, 2130 and 2230 despite Northern rail strike

Some weeks ago the RMT union announced a total of 12 days of planned strikes on consecutive Saturdays, including the Saturday of our Beer & Music Festival, 20 October which will impact on their services to and from Keighley. This Saturday, 20 October, Northern will be operating a reduced timetable with very few trains running before 9am and after 6pm.

Northern has released the its train timetable for the Leeds / Bradford to Skipton service (calling at Keighley) and visitors to the Festival should have little difficulty arriving by rail to enjoy one of the North’s best Beer & Music Festivals. For the timetable in operation, click HERE.

However the difficulty arises when returning home with the last trains to Leeds at 19.01 and 20.55, Bradford at 16.18 and Skipton at 18.21 and 19.23.

BUT do not despair, in the true spirit of the KWVR, where we do everything we can to ensure our visitors have a good time, revellers travelling in the Leeds direction will benefit from an express coach service from Keighley, provided by the KWVR, to Bingley, Shipley and Leeds railway stations. These coaches will depart from Keighley Station concourse at 20:30 and 22:30.

Although these coaches will be provided free of charge by the KWVR, I am sure you will understand that we will be very happy to receive donations which will be gratefully welcomed on the night.

In addition at 21:30 hrs (approx. – exact time will be published when known) there will be additional train service from Keighley to Shipley and Leeds ONLY – With kind support from London North Eastern Railway. Please note that standard national rail tickets will be required on this service.

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 13th & 14th October and midweek railcar service

This news post normally covers the upcoming weekend and the following 5 days. However with the Beer & Music Festival starting next Thursday, 18th October, this bulletin covers just the weekend service and mid week. A special Beer & Music Festival locomotive roster update will be issued next week covering all 4 days of the Festival.

The Class 101 diesel multiple unit will start the ball rolling at 09.00 on Saturday and the weekend’s steam service starts from Oxenhope at 11.00 with a 6 coach train hauled by Midland Railway 4F 0-6-0 43924. 43924 and the Class 101 diesel multiple unit will continue on Sunday and the 101 will also operate the 6 round trips on the Wednesday diesel railcar service

This restriction will continue until all reconstruction work has been completed.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power and coaching stock are available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.
