Locomotive Roster for the Weekend 2nd & 3rd December 2017

The first Santa Steam Specials ran at weekend in wonderful sunny, wintery conditions on Saturday but mixed weather on Sunday.

Pre-booked Santa Steam Specials take centre stage once again this weekend but for visitors without a Santa Steam Special ticket wishing to travel along the Worth Valley a diesel railcar service operates throughout the day, starting at 09.00, giving passengers a new perspective through the forward facing windows on our diesel railcars.

This weekend, once again, we will have a combination of locomotives with steam locomotives operating on the south, Oxenhope end of the train, assisted by one of our mainline diesel locomotives at the Keighley end. On Saturday steam motive power will be provided by LMS Class 5MT 4-6-0 44871 and on Sunday WD 2-8-0 90733  will have the honour of powering Santa up the Worth Valley. Diesel power will be in the capable hands of Class 25, 25 059 on both days.

The diesel railcar service will be in the hands of the Class 101 diesel multiple unit.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

50 Years of Santa Steam Specials – Part 2, 1991 – 2015

One month ago, we published Part 1 of this photographic record of 50 years of Santa Steam Specials. Now, as the 2016 season draws to a close, we celebrate the second 25 years of the day that Santa’s train rumbled out of Haworth Yard hauled by a J72 class 0-6-0T 69023 ‘Joem’.

Our membership and the general public have sent us their photographic record of those 50 years, without them this would have been a scant offering, thank you. Below is a sample from the second 25 years which brings the total number of images of those 50 years to over 240 photographs. So just follow this link to see Santa Steam Specials – Part 2, 1991 – 2015.

As with the first 25 years, some years are covered well and others with just a solitary image. If you have photographs to contribute to this wonderful record of the Railway’s achievements, send them to news@kwvr.co.uk .

Did you miss the first 25 years? If so just follow this link to see Santa Steam Specials – Part 1, 1965 – 1990.

Locomotive Roster for the Weekend 23rd & 24th December 2016

The first Santa Steam Specials of the season ran on the 26th & 27th November and after 4 hugely successful weekends the season comes to a climax with the last Specials on Friday 23rd and Christmas Eve.

Our volunteers have been working very hard keeping our visitors happy and entertained especially with trains full to capacity on every one of our trains.

This last two days will have a combination of locomotives with USATC S160 2-8-0 5820 on the south, Oxenhope end of the train assisted, for the final time, by Class 25 diesel 25 059 at the Keighley end.

The diesel service operates all day on both days and is free to those holding Santa Special tickets and pay on the day to other passengers, will be in the hands of our class 101 diesel multiple unit. This will be the last diesel service of 2016, returning on 7th January.

There are no trains on Christmas Day, we are sure everyone will agree that our dedicated band of volunteers deserve at least one day off, but our steam hauled Mince Pie Specials will run on Boxing Day and everyday until 2nd January 2017. These services will be hauled by BR Standard Class 4MT 4-6-0 75078.

50 Years of Santa Steam Specials – Part 1, 1965 – 1990

In 1965 the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway ran, what can be described as our first Santa Steam Special, a humble Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway 0-4-0ST no. 51218 which brought Father Christmas on the footplate from Haworth Yard to Haworth Station to bring goodwill to a small gathering of children and parents.

However it was in 1967, just over 6 months before the Railway re-opened that the first Santa train rumbled up the Valley hauled by a J72 class 0-6-0T 69023 ‘Joem’ and from these humble beginnings we come to the modern day with 6 or 7 coach trains hauled by large powerful mainline locomotives.

Over the past 12 months we have appealed to our membership and general public to send us their photographic record of those 50 years and we are pleased to showcase almost, but not quite, every one of those 50 years. Below is a sample from the first 25 years, with 1991 -2015 to follow. Just follow this link to see a large selection of our gallery of photographs Santa Steam Specials – Part 1, 1965 – 1990.

Santa Specials – a Photographic Look Back

The Santa Special Season from a photographic perspective can be summed up in a couple of words – wet and dark.

Although the sun did shine on occasions it was often interrupted by rain, damp and cold conditions, neither enticing for photographers to venture out nor particularly ideal for photography. However Richard Beckett, Colin Smith, Inspiring Images, Paul Livsey and Chris King did manage to venture out and we are pleased to show of a few of their photographs here but more can be found on our Flickr page, click HERE to see the full collection.

And of course, Ken Baker braved the elements with little companion Penny, to produce another quality video.

After Christmas, better weather however brought out more photographers in brighter conditions. A review of the Mince Pie Specials will follow shortly.

Christmas at Ingrow West, Sunday 7th December

When you are visiting the Railway with your children or grandchildren to ride on one of our Santa Specials on the 7th December or you are in the area on the day, then come along to Ingrow Station and the children can still join in the activities.

3 Locomotives Rostered for Santa Specials

For the first weekend of the Santa service USATC S160  2-8-0 5820 was scheduled to head the service but 43924 deputised on Saturday, resulting in a Derby product at each end as Class 25 25 059 was on the north end for the run down to Keighley. However 5820 was at the head on Sunday.

The schedule for the rest of the weekends up to Christmas is

Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th December LMS Class 5MT 4-6-0 45305
Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th December SR West Country Pacific 34092 ‘Wells’
Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st December LMS Class 5MT 4-6-0 45305

Standby on all 4 weekends of Santa Specials is MR 4F 0-6-0 43924

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Locomotive Roster Santa Weekend 29th & 30th November

For the first weekend of the Santa service USATC S160  2-8-0 5820 will be at the head of the service carrying Santa and his helpers bringing goodwill and cheer to children and adults alike. special timetable will be in operation for pre-booked tickets only, but Santa tickets may possibly be bought on the day, if any spare seats are available but it is wise to call beforehand.

The diesel service is pay-on-the-day and free to those holding Santa tickets and will be in the hands of Class 101 2 car DMU.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Winter Steam in the Valley

Kenneth F. Baker of Penny Steam, along with his faithfully dog, Penny, never disappoints and this series of videos of the Railway in Winter demonstrate, that even in the depths of winter, the Railway has much to offer. Make yourself a nice cup of cocoa, put your feet up and settle down to watch the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway on a Santa Special, Mince Pie Special and a normal service day on the 19th January 2014

Santa Special from the Archives

With modern video techniques and the latest locomotives at the head of the train we tend to forget Santa specials of past years. In this wonderful atmospheric black and white archive film by Phil Whitehead, converted to modern format, we see 2-8-0 8F 48431 and 0-6-0 Pannier 5775 get to grips with their train on the climb out of Keighley. Both engines are now retired and await their turn in the restoration queue.

We would love to hear from other enthusiasts who have archive film that we can feature in future months .. they say nostalgia is not what it used to be. It is!
