Virtual Locomotive Roster for Weekend 4th & 5th July and Wednesday 8th – Friday 10th July 2020

Four year’s ago all was well in the Valley with COVID-19 not even on the horizon, but all was not well with BR Class 4MT 4-6-0 75078 which had to be withdrawn from service the previous weekend. However repairs were concluded and the 60 year old locomotive took up its next scheduled duty the next weekend. This week we go back to 2016.

Our Vintage Sunday service was in action with Taff Vale Railway no. 85 at the head of a set of mixed vintage coaches, from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Trust and Vintage Carriages Trust:

The motive power for these virtual passenger services will be as follows:

  • Saturday 4th July 2020

Virtual Locomotive Roster for Weekend 13th & 14th June and weekdays 17th -19th June 2020

Our time travel this week takes us back to 2014. Just like last week, there was no vintage train service on Sunday in 2014 when MR 4F 0-6-0 43924, hauling a Father’s Day luncheon service, joined USATC S160 2-8-0 5820. Our imaginations have to stretch a little further as this year Taff Vale Class O2 0-6-2T no. 85 would have been the preferred locomotive for our vintage trains but six years ago was still a kit of parts in Haworth Locomotive Works.

The mainstay of this weekend’s virtual steam service will be USATC S160 2-8-0 5820 and the diesel turn will have our Class 101 Diesel Multiple Unit running the services with the first train leaving Haworth at 09.00 on Saturday. On Sunday 5820 will be joined by LNWR 0-6-2 ‘Coal Tank’ no. 1054 hauling the vintage train service comprising coaches from the late 19th and early 20th centuries belonging to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Trust and Vintage Carriages Trust.

The virtual Wednesday – Friday service, just as in 2014, will have 5820 continuing on from it’s weekend duties.

  • Saturday 13th June:
    Virtual Steam service – USATC S160 2-8-0 5820

    Virtual Morning Diesel service – British Railways Metropolitan-Cammel Class 101 Diesel Multiple Unit No’s. M51189 & Sc51803
  • Sunday 14th June:
    Virtual Steam service – USATC S160 2-8-0 5820
Virtual Vintage Steam service – LNWR ‘Coal Tank’ 0-6-2 1054
  • Wednesday 17th June – Friday 19th June:
Virtual Steam service – British Railways USATC S160 2-8-0 5820

Virtual Timetables:

Virtual Locomotive Roster for Weekend 6th & 7th June and weekdays 10th -12th June 2020

In looking back over past years, it would be very helpful if the services we ran matched the services we would have been running in 2020. In 2017 our roster post stated “A weekend of normal” running with no special trains and the standard Green timetable on Saturday and Blue timetable on Sunday”. So in our look back, we have to be a little more inventive as in 2020 we would be running Vintage Trains this Sunday.

The mainstay of this weekend’s virtual steam service will be BR Standard 4 4-6-0 75078, the first steam service on Saturday departing Oxenhope at 11.00 for 5 round trips to Keighley and the diesel turn will have our Class 101 Diesel Multiple Unit running the services with the first train leaving Oxenhope at 09.00 on Saturday. On Sunday 75078 will be joined by LNWR 0-6-2 ‘Coal Tank’ no. 1054 hauling the virtual vintage train service comprising coaches from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The virtual weekday service, just as in 2017, will have WD 2-8-0 90733 hauling the service.

  • Saturday 6th June:
Virtual Steam service – British Railways Class 4MT 4-6-0 75078

    Virtual Morning Diesel service – British Railways Metropolitan-Cammel Class 101 Diesel Multiple Unit No’s. M51189 & Sc51803
  • Sunday 7th June:
Virtual Steam service – British Railways Class 4MT 4-6-0 75078
Virtual Vintage Steam service – LNWR ‘Coal Tank’ 0-6-2 1054
  • Wednesday 10th June – Friday 12th June:
Virtual Steam service – British Railways WD 2-8-0 90733

Virtual Locomotive Roster for Weekend, 16th & 17th May 2020 and Mid-week 20th May 2020

This week our virtual roster takes us, once again, back to 2014, when not only was it the occasion of the Haworth 1940s weekend but also a special occasion when, on Saturday 17th May, Haworth Locomotive Works was witness to a ceremony of thanksgiving for the restoration of wartime locomotives WD 2-8-0 90733 from the UK, once more named for the day ‘Remembrance – less we forget’, and USTAC 2-8-0 5820 from the USA.

With last weekend’s celebration of the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, it is poignant to remember our ceremony of 6 years ago, a day also celebrating the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. The Liturgy and ‘Blessing’ was given by the Reverend Peter Mayo-Smith, Rector of Haworth and Psalm 121 was read by Andrew Simkins from the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway Preservation Society.

On Saturday Class 37 37 075 will be in virtual action, taking locomotive hauled stock in place of the scheduled Class 101 on the morning diesel service.

Virtual Locomotive Roster for Weekend 2nd & 3rd May 2020

Unlike in past years the May Bank holiday in 2020 falls, not on the first Monday in May, this year 4th, but on Friday 8th. As such we need to adapt the past locomotive roster to fit. Virtual Locomotive Allocation for Easter Week, 11th – 17th April

Our virtual rosters appear to be well received so this week we go back to 2017 and the unforgettable week we had with a famous celebrity. With social isolation now biting into all our lives, it’s time to bring back the virtual crowds to our part of West Yorkshire. This week we go back to Saturday 1st April for our Easter week roster of virtual running and whilst our guest locomotive is heading from Oxenhope to Carlisle, two stalwarts of our steam fleet are holding the fort on Saturday and Sunday.

But on Monday 10th April the virtual crowds will flock to the Worth Valley to see our star of the show, BR (LNER ) A3 4-6-2 60103 Flying Scotsman.

DAY 6: Under blue cloudless skies, ‘Flying Scotsman’ powers out up Keighley Bank.

We start the Easter weekend with two steam locomotives operating both days of the weekend and our diesel multiple unit on Saturday plus three locomotives in steam from Monday, 13th, right through to the following Friday, 17th April. Indeed, these are exciting virtual times indeed.

Passenger Train Banking

Under normal operating conditions the banking of passenger trains by a steam locomotive is not permitted. In the past when passenger services have been top and tailed by a steam engine the “banking” engine is towed and gives no assistance. As most will know, Flying Scotsman is not an ideal engine for a twisting 5 mile branchline with severe gradients on tight curves and tight turnouts.

Some have asked questions about the easing of the branch axle loading to allow ‘Scotsman’ to operate on the line. 60103 exceeds the permitted axle load for the KWVR and is not permitted to pass over a curve of less than 6 chains radius. Its operation has been authorised subject to a number of special restrictions, in particular, 60103 will be limited to 20 mph and must not slip when passing over 4 of our bridges as slipping may damage the bridges in question.

To minimise the risk of slipping the train, which will consist of 8 coaches (including 2 Pullman coaches), will be banked in the rear by our own locomotive and should result in some spectacular departures from Keighley.

Working hard, 90733 gives rear assistance , non-stop through Ingrow. Banking trial 4th February, 90733 gives rear assistance non-stop through Ingrow.

Virtual Locomotive Roster for Weekend 4th & 5th April 2020

If you are anything like me, I am missing my weekly routine of digging out the roster for the forthcoming weekend and letting all the subscribers to news@kwvr know what is running this weekend. So to keep us all in touch, we will be sending out a virtual roster based on what was running on the equivalent days in a year gone by. This week, 2015 – Easter weekend, 4th & 5th April. So what do we have on offer in this virtual roster for Saturday 4th and Sunday 6th April 2020 (ignoring the fact that Bridge 11 is missing at Ingrow and ignoring the fact that on Easter Saturday there was a two steam train service).

Haworth Shed News – (belated) October 2019

It has been some time since our young reporter Joe Shaw wrote his previous article and one would think that over the Summer, with no school work, Joe would have plenty of time to put virtual pen to paper. However, it is testimony to the dedication of our younger volunteers that he has been far too busy, working ON the Railway in a number of roles to help the wheels to keep turning during the summer months (and these youngsters do have a life (just) outside the Railway).

So once again we are delighted to publish, belatedly, Joe’s latest report, with a promise of more to follow soon.

The previous edition in this series mainly consisted on news on the diesel fleet, we are now back over to steam, with a rather detailed update on Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Class 25 ‘Ironclad 0-6-0 no. 957 as well as a brief update on WD 2-8-0 no. 90733.

Seen at Haworth on a service to Keighley, over the weekend of the 2nd & 3rd November, DRB no. M79964 operated along the branch for the first time in over 18 months.

Locomotive Roster for the weekend Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th September 2019

Annually, in September, we have a week devoted to repairing our track and civil infrastructure. Occasionally we need to extend this if the repair job is too big to complete in a week! This September is one of those occasions, as we need three weeks to complete work to eradicate the landslips that threaten the area around ‘Ebor Lane Bridge’ near Haworth (the bridge made famous at the end of The Railway Children film).

With the line severed north of Haworth Station, accordingly we will be operating a revised but varied timetable:

  • Steam shuttle: Oxenhope – Haworth. British Railways Class 2MT 2-6-0 78022 (south end) and British Railways Diesel Mechanical 0-6-0 No. D2511 (north end)
  • Vintage Bus Service: Haworth – Ingrow
