Locomotive Roster for weekdays commencing 31st July and weekend 5th & 6th August 2017

Last week the publication of the locomotive roster was unfortunately mistimed with the failure of USATC S160 2-8-0 5820, MR 4F 0-6-0 43924 deputising. The loco department had their workload increased when, at the weekend, WD 2-8-0 90733 failed and had to be replaced.

So with fingers crossed we anticipate that BR Class 4MT 4-6-0 75078 will be operating Monday – Saturday.

Saturday sees the another of our diesel and steam Saturdays sponsored by a local brewery but this, originally not in the planned schedule, sees a celebration of the official return to traffic of Sulzer Class 25 diesel 25 059 with the buffet being sponsored by local Keighley based, Goose Eye Brewery serving a selection of their own real ales throughout the day, including an ale, Sulzer Ale, especially brewed for the occasion. However unlike other Diesel & Ale Days this one runs into the evening with entertainment at Keighley. For full details visit the Sulzer & Ale Day page of the website

On Sunday 6th August, restored to good health after its problems last weekend, WD 2-8-0 90733 will take over from 75078 and will be joined by LNWR 0-6-2T ‘Coal tank’ 1054 with another of our Sunday Vintage trains comprising a set of our more venerable coaches with four from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Trust and the Metropolitan brake from the Vintage Carriages Trust.

Locomotive Roster for 2017 ‘Haworth 1940s’ Weekend

With the Haworth 1940s Weekend stretching over 3 days, steam service trains will be running everyday with 3 steam locomotives that saw service in the war years plus some mainline diesel action on Saturday and Sunday morning.

On the roster for the whole weekend’s operation is WD 2-8-0 90733, a locomotive built specifically as part of the war effort, and saw service in mainland Europe before cessation of hostilities.

On Saturday 90733 is joined by our second locomotive built for the hostilities, USATC S160 2-8-0 5820, built in the USA to the British loading gauge but shipped directly to Poland in 1945, from where it was purchased in 1977. The 3rd steam engine in action will be 4F 0-6-0 43924, built in 1920 by the Midland Railway which had already “clocked” up many miles after 19 years service when war broke out in Europe.

Starting with the 11.00 departure from Keighley these 3 locomotives will work turn and turn about giving a variety of motive power on departures from Keighley. Of particular interest to enthusiasts will be the 17.45, the last passenger working of the day from Keighley when 90733 will double head with train engine 5820. The last departure from Keighley will be the 18.25 ECS working to Oxenhope.

Class 101 DMU will be on the early morning diesel service on Friday when the Green timetable is in operation. On Saturday and Sunday the first and third departures from Keighley and the second from Oxenhope will be diesel hauled stock with BR Type 2 diesel electric locomotive number 25 059 in charge.

And don’t forget, mid-week, the Diesel Railcar Service that operates on Wednesday.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 6th & 7th May 2017

It has been a busy period for our volunteers over the last month or so, with hardly a respite since the 31st March and throughout April . So it is probably with some relief that we have the next two weekends of “normal” running with no special trains and the standard Green timetable on Saturday and Blue timetable on Sunday.

The mainstay of this weekend’s steam service will be WD 2-8-0 90733, the first steam service on Saturday departing Oxenhope at 11.00 for 5 round trips to Keighley. On Sunday 90733 will be joined on Sunday by BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 with passenger services starting at 10.15

The Saturday diesel turn will have our Class 101 Diesel Multiple Unit running the service with the first train leaving Oxenhope at 09.00.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Due to engineering works next week there will be no mid-week diesel railcar service on the 10th May.

Locomotive Roster for Bank Holiday Weekend 29th & 30th April and 1st May 2017

No sooner has Easter passed and another holiday period starts with a 3 day full 2 train service Saturday – Monday. The weekend starts with a modified Green timetable on Saturday with a full line all day mainline diesel hauled service commencing at 09.00. This service, the first of our mainline diesel hauled days, will be in the hands of BR English Electric Class 37 locomotive 37 075. At the head of the steam hauled passenger train will be WD 2-8-0 90733.

On Sunday the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race passes up the Valley and we are operating a special all steam timetable starting at 09.30, continuing throughout the day. 90733 will be joined by BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 for the Sunday services and on Monday when the Blue timetable will operate.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Locomotive Roster for Week 10th – 16th & 17th April 2017

What a week we had with our Pacific visitor 60103 ‘Flying Scotsman’ and judging by all the happy faces on both the passengers and the staff it is fair to say a good time was had by all. BUT, now all the excitement is over with the LNER guest, it is back to normal and over this week and into the Easter weekend, 3 steam locomotives will be in operation.

Weekday Service – BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078
Good Friday – Easter Monday, fresh from banking duties to the ‘Flying Scotsman’ WD 2-8-0 90733 will be on the main service set and USATC S160 2-8-0 5820 will be hauling a service set plus Pullman cars, Anne and Mary, and the kitchen car.

Passenger Train Banking

Under normal operating conditions the banking of passenger trains by a steam locomotive is not permitted. In the past when passenger services have been top and tailed by a steam engine the “banking” engine is towed and gives no assistance. As most will know, Flying Scotsman is not an ideal engine for a twisting 5 mile branchline with severe gradients on tight curves and tight turnouts.

Some have asked questions about the easing of the branch axle loading to allow ‘Scotsman’ to operate on the line. 60103 exceeds the permitted axle load for the KWVR and is not permitted to pass over a curve of less than 6 chains radius. Its operation has been authorised subject to a number of special restrictions, in particular, 60103 will be limited to 20 mph and must not slip when passing over 4 of our bridges as slipping may damage the bridges in question.

To minimise the risk of slipping the train, which will consist of 8 coaches (including 2 Pullman coaches), will be banked in the rear by our own locomotive and should result in some spectacular departures from Keighley.

Working hard, 90733 gives rear assistance , non-stop through Ingrow. Banking trial 4th February, 90733 gives rear assistance non-stop through Ingrow.

Lineside Photography

On the 31st March for the departure of the railtour and for the normal steam hauled services on the 1st & 2nd April, photographers wishing to photograph from the lineside must carry a valid KWVR Photo Permit AND their KWVR membership card.

During 60103’s week of operation on the branch, 3rd – 9th April only those carrying their Annual Photo Permit, Flying Scotsman letter of authorisation AND wearing the special Flying Scotsman Hi-Viz vest will be allowed trackside.

Normal access restrictions as detailed in the Photographer’s Personal Safety Handbook will apply but there will be strict policing of the lineside during the period 31st March – 9th April and anyone NOT carrying ALL the necessary documentation will be evicted from the Railway’s land.
Photo-permit_2

In addition we ask in particular that all permit-holders and members of the public respect our land boundaries and do not trespass on any private land.   If you do have permission from land owners to take photographs from their land, then we would recommend having written authority from them with you to avoid being challenged during the event.

We ask that you assist us during the event by alerting a member of Railway staff or, once you are in a position of safety, by calling the office on 01535 645214 if you see anyone not wearing the special clothing and/or trespassing on private land.

2017 Winter Steam Gala Update

The situation with the two ‘Black 5s’, 45212 and 45407 remains fluid. They are due mainline certification this week and if that is forthcoming they should arrive on the Railway Friday evening by our connection at Keighley. This, of course precludes their participation on Friday, but will, if they do arrive, operate Saturday and Sunday requiring an amendment to the working timetables as previously published.

As with all our Galas we publish the working timetables for the various workings. The up-to-date version (01/03/17) can be viewed by downloading the 2017 Winter Steam Gala Working Timetable PDF. It is important to note that these timetables take account that 45212 and 45407 MAY be attending and reflect that the situation remains fluid.

The public timetables can be viewed HERE >>

Guided tours of the Haworth Locomotive Works

Once again we will be running our unique tour behind the scenes in our engine shed and workshop at Haworth, the tours being led by our experienced and knowledgeable volunteer tour guides. The tours are organised to raise funds to restore the Ivatt 2-6-2T 41241 and although the tours are free, we do ask our guests to consider making a Gift Aided donation, usually in the region of £5 to the KWVR Charity (no 1136853).

Tour times will connect with trains from Keighley arriving at Haworth where you will meet your guide at Haworth Station for your 45/60 minute tour.
