Virtual Locomotive Roster for Weekend 6th & 7th June and weekdays 10th -12th June 2020

In looking back over past years, it would be very helpful if the services we ran matched the services we would have been running in 2020. In 2017 our roster post stated “A weekend of normal” running with no special trains and the standard Green timetable on Saturday and Blue timetable on Sunday”. So in our look back, we have to be a little more inventive as in 2020 we would be running Vintage Trains this Sunday.

The mainstay of this weekend’s virtual steam service will be BR Standard 4 4-6-0 75078, the first steam service on Saturday departing Oxenhope at 11.00 for 5 round trips to Keighley and the diesel turn will have our Class 101 Diesel Multiple Unit running the services with the first train leaving Oxenhope at 09.00 on Saturday. On Sunday 75078 will be joined by LNWR 0-6-2 ‘Coal Tank’ no. 1054 hauling the virtual vintage train service comprising coaches from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The virtual weekday service, just as in 2017, will have WD 2-8-0 90733 hauling the service.

  • Saturday 6th June:

Virtual Locomotive Roster for Weekend, 16th & 17th May 2020 and Mid-week 20th May 2020

This week our virtual roster takes us, once again, back to 2014, when not only was it the occasion of the Haworth 1940s weekend but also a special occasion when, on Saturday 17th May, Haworth Locomotive Works was witness to a ceremony of thanksgiving for the restoration of wartime locomotives WD 2-8-0 90733 from the UK, once more named for the day ‘Remembrance – less we forget’, and USTAC 2-8-0 5820 from the USA.

With last weekend’s celebration of the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, it is poignant to remember our ceremony of 6 years ago, a day also celebrating the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. The Liturgy and ‘Blessing’ was given by the Reverend Peter Mayo-Smith, Rector of Haworth and Psalm 121 was read by Andrew Simkins from the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway Preservation Society.

On Saturday Class 37 37 075 will be in virtual action, taking locomotive hauled stock in place of the scheduled Class 101 on the morning diesel service.

Virtual Locomotive Allocation for Easter Week, 11th – 17th April

Our virtual rosters appear to be well received so this week we go back to 2017 and the unforgettable week we had with a famous celebrity. With social isolation now biting into all our lives, it’s time to bring back the virtual crowds to our part of West Yorkshire. This week we go back to Saturday 1st April for our Easter week roster of virtual running and whilst our guest locomotive is heading from Oxenhope to Carlisle, two stalwarts of our steam fleet are holding the fort on Saturday and Sunday.

But on Monday 10th April the virtual crowds will flock to the Worth Valley to see our star of the show, BR (LNER ) A3 4-6-2 60103 Flying Scotsman.

DAY 6: Under blue cloudless skies, ‘Flying Scotsman’ powers out up Keighley Bank.

We start the Easter weekend with two steam locomotives operating both days of the weekend and our diesel multiple unit on Saturday plus three locomotives in steam from Monday, 13th, right through to the following Friday, 17th April. Indeed, these are exciting virtual times indeed.

Passenger Train Banking

Under normal operating conditions the banking of passenger trains by a steam locomotive is not permitted. In the past when passenger services have been top and tailed by a steam engine the “banking” engine is towed and gives no assistance. As most will know, Flying Scotsman is not an ideal engine for a twisting 5 mile branchline with severe gradients on tight curves and tight turnouts.

Some have asked questions about the easing of the branch axle loading to allow ‘Scotsman’ to operate on the line. 60103 exceeds the permitted axle load for the KWVR and is not permitted to pass over a curve of less than 6 chains radius. Its operation has been authorised subject to a number of special restrictions, in particular, 60103 will be limited to 20 mph and must not slip when passing over 4 of our bridges as slipping may damage the bridges in question.

To minimise the risk of slipping the train, which will consist of 8 coaches (including 2 Pullman coaches), will be banked in the rear by our own locomotive and should result in some spectacular departures from Keighley.

Working hard, 90733 gives rear assistance , non-stop through Ingrow. Banking trial 4th February, 90733 gives rear assistance non-stop through Ingrow.

Virtual Locomotive Roster for Mid-Week 6th – 9th April & Good Friday 2020

The virtual weekend with ‘City of Wells’ was a great success in the Spring sunshine. Now we enter Easter fortnight with a whole week of virtual passenger trains. For the weekend we time-warped back to 2015. For the weekday running and Good Friday its back one more year, to 2014 when three locomotives share duties.

The weekday service is in the hands of 43924 and, after returning from overhaul, earlier in the year in a pseudo-BR black livery as 95820, Good Friday sees ‘Big Jim’ re-appear in its newly applied authentic grey USATC livery together with a miraculously overhauled WD 90733. And if that was not enough, the morning diesel service will see the railbus replaced by diesel locomotive haulage.

  • Monday 6th April – Thursday 9th April
Virtual Steam service – Midland Railway Class 4F 0-6-0 43924
    Timetable – Virtually Pink Timetable
  • Good Friday 10th April:

Haworth Shed News – (belated) October 2019

It has been some time since our young reporter Joe Shaw wrote his previous article and one would think that over the Summer, with no school work, Joe would have plenty of time to put virtual pen to paper. However, it is testimony to the dedication of our younger volunteers that he has been far too busy, working ON the Railway in a number of roles to help the wheels to keep turning during the summer months (and these youngsters do have a life (just) outside the Railway).

So once again we are delighted to publish, belatedly, Joe’s latest report, with a promise of more to follow soon.

The previous edition in this series mainly consisted on news on the diesel fleet, we are now back over to steam, with a rather detailed update on Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Class 25 ‘Ironclad 0-6-0 no. 957 as well as a brief update on WD 2-8-0 no. 90733.

Seen at Haworth on a service to Keighley, over the weekend of the 2nd & 3rd November, DRB no. M79964 operated along the branch for the first time in over 18 months.

News from Haworth Sheds – May 2019

In early April we brought you the first of a regular feature by one of our younger volunteers, Joe Shaw, of what the team have been doing to our locomotive fleet within the confines of Haworth Shed. As before Joe, has scoured Haworth Shed’s Facebook page and brings together what has been going on since his last report. So let Joe take up the story.

Following on from my first article where I outlined the latest activities within Haworth Shed, this article is a continuation of that, as well as announcing the movements of locomotives returning and leaving the railway.

This month, news of

  • WD 2-8-0 90733
  • LMS Ivatt 2-6-2T 41241
  • TVR Class 02 0-6-2T 85
  • LMS Class 5 45212

News from Haworth Sheds

If you have visited the KWVR and travelled along the Worth Valley, I am sure you will have encountered at least one of our young volunteers. One of those volunteers, 15 years old Joe Shaw, has joined the website team and, with a fair wind and school work permitting, Joe will be bringing news of what is happening in Haworth Shed and, hopefully in due course, other areas of the Railway. Those who follow Haworth Shed on Facebook, may well recognise some of the content, and thanks must go to the volunteers there for keeping us posted on what is happening to keep the wheels turning.

This article is the first of what we hope will be a regular feature of News@KWVR. We’ll let Joe take up the story ……

The KWVR has nearly 20 operational diesel and steam locomotives, to keep the wheels turning on all of these locomotives, without a doubt, is a challenge. However, fortunately at the KWVR, there is a team of hardworking, enthusiastic volunteers who work day and, sometimes, night to ensure that these locomotives are well maintained and are able to haul trains up and down the valley.

WD 2-8-0 90733 Withdrawn

Due for withdrawal in 2017 after 10 years service, WD 2-8-0 90733 had been granted an extension to its boiler certificate to allow further use well into 2018, with a final withdrawal date set as 6th April

However, despite being given an extension to its boiler ticket, following its last Santa Steam Special turn it was discovered that a couple of the small tubes had developed cracking. With a limited time in traffic and unable to justify the cost of repairs, the Locomotive Department reluctantly decided that it would not be economical to do a repair for the sake of a few more days running. It also means that its appearance at the 2018 Spring Gala will now not be its final appearance at a KWVR Gala, the 2017 Winter Steam gala now holds that honour.

Sadly, therefore, 2017 Santa Steam Specials have been the locomotive’s swansong, so it will be some time before we see this unique engine power its train up the Worth Valley.

Locomotive Roster for the Weekend 9th & 10th December 2017

This weekend, once again, we will have a combination of locomotives with steam locomotives operating on the south, Oxenhope end of the train, assisted by one of our mainline diesel locomotives at the Keighley end. For the last 2 weekends 90733 and 44871 have taken the steam duties but this weekend we have one change. On Saturday steam motive power will be provided by USATC S160 2-8-0 5820 and on Sunday WD 2-8-0 90733 will once again have the honour of powering Santa up the Worth Valley. Diesel power will be in the capable hands of Class 25, 25 059 on both days.

Pre-booked Santa Steam Specials take centre stage once again this weekend but for visitors without a Santa Steam Special ticket wishing to travel along the Worth Valley a diesel railcar service operates throughout the day, starting at 09.00, giving passengers a new perspective through the forward facing windows on our diesel railcars. This service is free to Santa Steam Special ticket holders.

For the diesel railcar timetable in operation this weekend, please click HERE to visit the main website.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.
