Locomotive Roster for Weekend 7th & 8th April and weekday to 13th April 2018

BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 has held the fort throughout the week and should be taking a well earned break this weekend. USATC S160 2-8-0 5820 is scheduled to takes its place at the head of the steam service on Saturday and Sunday. However, with 5820 having had to be withdrawn last weekend for repairs to be carried out, should the work not be concluded in time, 75078 will step into the breach, and its rest will have to wait until Monday.

The Easter half term programme of services continue Monday – Friday when MR 4F 0-6-0 43924 will provide the power on all services during the week.

The diesel services on Saturday and Sunday will be handled by our Class 101 diesel multiple unit, with the diesel railbus retired to the comparative warmth of Haworth Shed.

On Saturday the first train departs Oxenhope (diesel railcar) at 09.00 with steam locomotive trains operating from 11.00 and on Sunday, the first passenger service is steam hauled at 10.15, working a two train service with the diesel multiple unit. Weekday has the pink timetable in use with the first service leaving Oxenhope at 10.00.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Locomotive Roster for Good Friday 30th March to 5th April 2018

The Blue timetable is in operation on all 4 days of the Easter weekend so it will be steam locomotives on all trains over the weekend. The first train departs Oxenhope each day at 10.15 and the last departure of the day is 17.15 from Keighley.

BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 is back this weekend after hauling the steam services last weekend but will be joined by USATC S160 2-8-0 5820 at the head of the second service Friday to Monday.

On Tuesday 75078 continues and, with only one steam service operating all day Tuesday – Friday, 5820 rests from duty. The first train departs Oxenhope at 10.00.

There are no diesel services this weekend but return on Saturday 6th April.

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 24th & 25th March and Mid-week 28th March 2018

BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 is back this weekend at the head of the steam service on Saturday and Sunday. The Easter programme of services start next Friday and the roster for Friday and Easter week will be posted on Thursday, 29th March.

First train departs Oxenhope (diesel railcar) at 09.00 with 75078 operating from 11.00 and on Sunday, the first passenger service is steam hauled at 10.15, working a two train service with the diesel railbus.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Diesel Service Amendment

No sooner had the news item been sent out regarding the diesel service this weekend, than Mission Control (Haworth Station) sent out an amendment that only the Saturday diesel service would now be cancelled and Sunday services will run as per the published Blue timetable with 75078 and M79964.

In addition, on Saturday all steam services on the advertised revised green timetable, will run as a top and tailed formation with steam on the Oxenhope end, 75078, and the class 20 diesel, 20 031, on the Keighley end.

Hopefully, that is now set in stone, unless someone else knows differently! So, brave the cold, just as our volunteers have bravely done, and get out there with your cameras to record this unusual formation, normally only seen when the man in red with the reindeer comes around.

Locomotive Roster for Weekend 3rd & 4th March and Mid-week 7th March 2018

Snow permitting, steam services will run on Saturday and Sunday, this weekend with BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 on a 4 coach train, including real ale buffet car.

This week’s midweek diesel railcar service was a very welcome sight for locals wanting to travel into Keighley. Despite the snow, as always, our volunteers rose to the occasion and made sure that the service ran as advertised and some used the service as a means of getting about the Valley with other forms of transport struggling. The weekend and mid-week railbus services will once again have railbus M79964 providing the accommodation.

On Saturday the first train departs Oxenhope (diesel railcar) at 09.00 with 75078 operating from 11.00 and on Sunday, the first passenger service is steam hauled at 10.15, working a two train service with the diesel railbus.

The first steam train leaves Oxenhope at 10.00 and the last service on the branch departs Keighley at 17.10 – 5 round trips in all.

Locomotive Roster for weekdays commencing 31st July and weekend 5th & 6th August 2017

Last week the publication of the locomotive roster was unfortunately mistimed with the failure of USATC S160 2-8-0 5820, MR 4F 0-6-0 43924 deputising. The loco department had their workload increased when, at the weekend, WD 2-8-0 90733 failed and had to be replaced.

So with fingers crossed we anticipate that BR Class 4MT 4-6-0 75078 will be operating Monday – Saturday.

Saturday sees the another of our diesel and steam Saturdays sponsored by a local brewery but this, originally not in the planned schedule, sees a celebration of the official return to traffic of Sulzer Class 25 diesel 25 059 with the buffet being sponsored by local Keighley based, Goose Eye Brewery serving a selection of their own real ales throughout the day, including an ale, Sulzer Ale, especially brewed for the occasion. However unlike other Diesel & Ale Days this one runs into the evening with entertainment at Keighley. For full details visit the Sulzer & Ale Day page of the website

On Sunday 6th August, restored to good health after its problems last weekend, WD 2-8-0 90733 will take over from 75078 and will be joined by LNWR 0-6-2T ‘Coal tank’ 1054 with another of our Sunday Vintage trains comprising a set of our more venerable coaches with four from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Trust and the Metropolitan brake from the Vintage Carriages Trust.

This week we also have the Vintage Bus Tours running between Oxenhope and Haworth and these are free to folders of a KWVR Rover ticket

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Passenger Train Banking

Under normal operating conditions the banking of passenger trains by a steam locomotive is not permitted. In the past when passenger services have been top and tailed by a steam engine the “banking” engine is towed and gives no assistance. As most will know, Flying Scotsman is not an ideal engine for a twisting 5 mile branchline with severe gradients on tight curves and tight turnouts.

Some have asked questions about the easing of the branch axle loading to allow ‘Scotsman’ to operate on the line. 60103 exceeds the permitted axle load for the KWVR and is not permitted to pass over a curve of less than 6 chains radius. Its operation has been authorised subject to a number of special restrictions, in particular, 60103 will be limited to 20 mph and must not slip when passing over 4 of our bridges as slipping may damage the bridges in question.

To minimise the risk of slipping the train, which will consist of 8 coaches (including 2 Pullman coaches), will be banked in the rear by our own locomotive and should result in some spectacular departures from Keighley.

Working hard, 90733 gives rear assistance , non-stop through Ingrow. Banking trial 4th February, 90733 gives rear assistance non-stop through Ingrow.

Lineside Photography

On the 31st March for the departure of the railtour and for the normal steam hauled services on the 1st & 2nd April, photographers wishing to photograph from the lineside must carry a valid KWVR Photo Permit AND their KWVR membership card.

During 60103’s week of operation on the branch, 3rd – 9th April only those carrying their Annual Photo Permit, Flying Scotsman letter of authorisation AND wearing the special Flying Scotsman Hi-Viz vest will be allowed trackside.

Normal access restrictions as detailed in the Photographer’s Personal Safety Handbook will apply but there will be strict policing of the lineside during the period 31st March – 9th April and anyone NOT carrying ALL the necessary documentation will be evicted from the Railway’s land.

In addition we ask in particular that all permit-holders and members of the public respect our land boundaries and do not trespass on any private land.   If you do have permission from land owners to take photographs from their land, then we would recommend having written authority from them with you to avoid being challenged during the event.

We ask that you assist us during the event by alerting a member of Railway staff or, once you are in a position of safety, by calling the office on 01535 645214 if you see anyone not wearing the special clothing and/or trespassing on private land.
