Locomotive Roster for weekdays commencing 31st July and weekend 5th & 6th August 2017

Last week the publication of the locomotive roster was unfortunately mistimed with the failure of USATC S160 2-8-0 5820, MR 4F 0-6-0 43924 deputising. The loco department had their workload increased when, at the weekend, WD 2-8-0 90733 failed and had to be replaced.

So with fingers crossed we anticipate that BR Class 4MT 4-6-0 75078 will be operating Monday – Saturday.

Saturday sees the another of our diesel and steam Saturdays sponsored by a local brewery but this, originally not in the planned schedule, sees a celebration of the official return to traffic of Sulzer Class 25 diesel 25 059 with the buffet being sponsored by local Keighley based, Goose Eye Brewery serving a selection of their own real ales throughout the day, including an ale, Sulzer Ale, especially brewed for the occasion. However unlike other Diesel & Ale Days this one runs into the evening with entertainment at Keighley. For full details visit the Sulzer & Ale Day page of the website

On Sunday 6th August, restored to good health after its problems last weekend, WD 2-8-0 90733 will take over from 75078 and will be joined by LNWR 0-6-2T ‘Coal tank’ 1054 with another of our Sunday Vintage trains comprising a set of our more venerable coaches with four from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Trust and the Metropolitan brake from the Vintage Carriages Trust.

This week we also have the Vintage Bus Tours running between Oxenhope and Haworth and these are free to folders of a KWVR Rover ticket

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Sulzer & Ale Day – 5th August

5th August will mark the official re-launch into traffic, after extensive bodywork repairs, of our Class 25 diesel no. 25 059. As with the previous Diesel & Ale Days the trains will be sponsored by a local real ale brewery, on this occasion, Goose Eye Brewery of Keighley and is a Summer warm up to our 2017 Beer and Music Festival on the 19th – 22nd October.

Diesel hauled services will operate from mid-afternoon with the 14.45 departure from Oxenhope and will continue through to early evening with the last departure, the 21.00 from Keighley, arriving back at Oxenhope at 21.25.

The on-train bar, exclusively serving a selection of hand-pulled Goose Eye Brewery ales, will feature the special ‘Sulzer Ale’ brewed and named especially for the event. (Sulzer refers to the manufacturer of the engine fitted to the locomotive.)

And to top off the day, you will be able to enjoy live music at Keighley by Night Patrol between 18.30 and 19.30 when hot food will also be available at Keighley.

This service operates in addition to the steam train service on which, subject to availability, a real-ale buffet car will also be provided.

If you would like more information about the locomotive 25 059, visit the KWVR website.

Sulzer and Ale Day, in association with ‘Goose Eye brewery’ – part of our exciting new series of ‘Diesel and Ale Day’ events.

Other Diesel & Ale Days for 2017 and the diesel locomotive scheduled to haul them are:
29th July – Wishbone Brewery, Keighley – 20 031
26th August – Salamander Brewery, Bradford – 37 075
30th September – Sunbeam Brewery, Leeds – 20 031

In addition, it is a Diesel & Ale Day on Saturday with Class 25 059 providing the diesel service throughout the day when the buffet will be sponsored by Cullingworth based, Old Spot Brewery serving a selection of their own real ales throughout the day.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Locomotive Roster for 2017 ‘Haworth 1940s’ Weekend

With the Haworth 1940s Weekend stretching over 3 days, steam service trains will be running everyday with 3 steam locomotives that saw service in the war years plus some mainline diesel action on Saturday and Sunday morning.

On the roster for the whole weekend’s operation is WD 2-8-0 90733, a locomotive built specifically as part of the war effort, and saw service in mainland Europe before cessation of hostilities.

On Saturday 90733 is joined by our second locomotive built for the hostilities, USATC S160 2-8-0 5820, built in the USA to the British loading gauge but shipped directly to Poland in 1945, from where it was purchased in 1977. The 3rd steam engine in action will be 4F 0-6-0 43924, built in 1920 by the Midland Railway which had already “clocked” up many miles after 19 years service when war broke out in Europe.

Starting with the 11.00 departure from Keighley these 3 locomotives will work turn and turn about giving a variety of motive power on departures from Keighley. Of particular interest to enthusiasts will be the 17.45, the last passenger working of the day from Keighley when 90733 will double head with train engine 5820. The last departure from Keighley will be the 18.25 ECS working to Oxenhope.

Class 101 DMU will be on the early morning diesel service on Friday when the Green timetable is in operation. On Saturday and Sunday the first and third departures from Keighley and the second from Oxenhope will be diesel hauled stock with BR Type 2 diesel electric locomotive number 25 059 in charge.

And don’t forget, mid-week, the Diesel Railcar Service that operates on Wednesday.

For the timetables in operation this weekend, please click HERE to visit the Times & Fares page of the website.

Whilst every effort will made to ensure that the advised motive power is available, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway reserve the right to change this when operational circumstances so dictate.

Timetable for 3rd – 9th April

The timetable published on the website is the public timetable in operation over the period 3rd – 9th April showing only those trains for which the public can turn up on the day and travel behind one of our own fleet of locomotives. All seats to travel behind the Flying Scotsman are sold and no seats will be sold on the day.

In order that photographs can take advantage of 60103’s visit, follow this link to download a PDF version of the full timetable in operation each day – Flying Scotsman Timetable

We remind you, once again, that we have staff patrolling the full length of the branchline and to be lineside you need to have with you the special Hi-Viz Flying Scotsman vest, an accompanying letter and your annual lineside permit with photo ID which must correspond with the permit number to that shown in the letter.

60103 and support coach arrived safely on the Railway last night as these images at Keighley testify before being towed to Haworth by diesel locomotive 25 059

This will be a very special occasion for the KWVR and we look forward to receiving your photographs. Please send them to news@kwvr.co.uk

Locomotive Roster for the Weekend 23rd & 24th December 2016

The first Santa Steam Specials of the season ran on the 26th & 27th November and after 4 hugely successful weekends the season comes to a climax with the last Specials on Friday 23rd and Christmas Eve.

Our volunteers have been working very hard keeping our visitors happy and entertained especially with trains full to capacity on every one of our trains.

This last two days will have a combination of locomotives with USATC S160 2-8-0 5820 on the south, Oxenhope end of the train assisted, for the final time, by Class 25 diesel 25 059 at the Keighley end.

These services will be hauled by BR Standard Class 4MT 4-6-0 75078.

Amendment to Locomotive Roster for the Weekend 17th & 18th December 2016

This weekend is week 4 of Santa Steam Specials and the weather, in the main, appears to be holding out so relatively kind to our passengers compared to the last few years. Just a nice sprinkling of snow and a bright sunny day would really set the scene.

90733 will be providing the steam traction on both days this weekend with the class 25 continuing at the north, Keighley, end and will be the motive power on the evening Carol Service Train, for which just a few seats remain.

90733-1612102-pli25-059-1612101-pli

The Santa Steam Specials are sold out but the diesel service operates all day on both days and is free to those holding Santa Special tickets and is pay on the day to other passengers. Again the service will be in the hands of our class 101 diesel multiple unit.

Locomotive Roster for the Weekend 3rd & 4th December 2016

The first Santa Steam Specials ran last weekend, and started with a cloudless blue sky, sunshine but, at times, a bitterly cold breeze, just what you would like to expect on a Santa weekend. Sunday almost reverted to type, but the sun managed a few rays throughout the day, although chilling rain hit the Valley late morning. Here are a few images from that first weekend courtesy of the photographers who made it out on the day.

Last weekend saw USATC S160 2-8-0 5820 on the south, Oxenhope end of the train assisted by Class 25 diesel 25 059 at the Keighley end. 5820 is in action again this weekend but the weekend starts with WD 2-8-0 90733 providing the steam traction on Saturday giving way to 5820 on Sunday. After its protracted overhaul the class 25 continues on diesel duty and made a welcome sight on its return to action.

The Santa Steam Specials are sold out but the diesel service operates all day on both days and is free to those holding Santa Special tickets and is pay on the day to other passengers. Again the service will be in the hands of our class 101 diesel multiple unit.

Locomotive Roster for the Weekend 26th & 27th November 2016

The first Santa Steam Specials run this weekend, when normal steam passenger services between now and Christmas are suspended and the pre-booked only Santa Steam Specials take centre stage. For visitors without a Santa Steam Special ticket wishing to travel along the Worth Valley a diesel railcar service operates throughout the day, starting at 09.00, giving passengers a new perspective through the forward facing windows on our diesel railcars.

Our volunteers have been working very hard decorating the carriages and stations and with trains full to capacity it is fingers crossed that we have fair weather to greet all our little visitors to Father Christmas. This weekend will have a combination of locomotives with USATC S160 2-8-0 5820 on the south, Oxenhope end of the train assisted by Class 25 diesel 25 059 at the Keighley end. After a protracted overhaul this is a welcome return to service for the class 25.

KWVR introduces new Saturday Diesel Locomotive Service

Following the decision not to hold a Diesel Gala weekend during 2015, the Railway has been looking at ways to operate our diesel locomotives on duties that may prove attractive to visitors. We already use the diesel locomotives for morning duties on bank holiday weekends, some special events, and on selected Summer Saturdays, but we recognised these short early morning duties weren’t ideal for enthusiasts to attend and enjoy riding behind their favourite locomotives.

We are now pleased to confirm that a diesel locomotive hauled train will operate ALL DAY on the following Saturdays: 11th April, 9th May, 13th June, 11th July and 8th August which will operate in addition to the steam train service. Starting at 09.00 from Oxenhope, the diesel loco hauled train will replace the diesel railcar service and operate 6 round trips of the line, finishing back at Oxenhope at 17.25. A real-ale buffet car will also be provided on these trains*. In addition, normal fares will be charged. An all-day Rover ticket costing only £16 is excellent value for a full day behind your favourite locomotive.

Update – 15th march 2015

In addition it has now been announced that on Sunday 12th April D0226 will haul the 1315, 1445 and 1615 from Oxenhope and 1400, 1530 and 1700 from Keighley. On Sunday 10th May D0226 will haul the 0900, 1015 and 1145 from Oxenhope and 0940, 1100 and 1230 from Keighley.

KWVR – The Tour de France Railway

TdF6_IIJuly 6th, 2014 will go down in the history of the Keighley and Worth Valley, as the day when the Railway ran a record number of trains staffed by a record number of volunteers although, whether it carried a record number of passengers is disputable. Oh, and there is the matter of a cycle race that took place watched by a record number of people by the roadside. So records tumbled throughout the weekend as Le Grand Depart of The Tour de France took Yorkshire by storm.

The photographs only tell part of the story. Behind the photographs were weeks of planning and behind the scenes work on rolling stock, catering requirements and so much more which all came together to produce an intensive train service, the like of which the Railway has never seen in its long and humble existence. This was more like commuting into a big city rather than a journey along a quiet Yorkshire railway by-way.
