First “passenger” train on nascent KWVR

In a year of 50th anniversaries which have so far included the arrival of the first rolling stock and founding of the Vintage Carriages Trust, one 50th anniversary nearly passed un-noticed. On the 5th June 1965, with stock having arrived only a few months earlier, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway operated its first ever passenger train, although it was a far cry from the 6 coach Keighley – Oxenhope trains that regularly make the journey up and down the Valley today. It would be another 3 years before regular passenger trains returned to the Valley.

Formed of Lancashire & Yorkshire 0-4-0ST 51218 and the Southern Railway ‘Matchboard’ coach no. 3554, the Railway offered rides out of Haworth Yard, under Bridge 26 and a short distance along Haworth loop in conditions that today would give any self respecting Safety Officer a heart attack. A few photographs survive of the day courtesy of Chris Bray and F. W. Smith and show not only enthusiastic men but wives and girl friends with children of all sizes queuing for a ride and swarming all over the tracks of Haworth Yard.

A small but insignificant step for which we are eternally grateful 50 years on.

WVL343On the same day photographer Martin S. Welch was in the Highlands of Scotland and by chance took this photograph of BR Class 20 D8031 at Kittybrewster Shed, Aberdeen complete with tablet catcher and snowplough. It would be many years before this locomotive was withdrawn and avoided the cutters torch by being preserved on the KWVR; today operational with its later numbering of 20 031.

Locomotive Roster Week 8th – 12th June and weekend to 13th & 14th June 2015

BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 is again in action this week on the weekday service and will handle all the services Monday – Friday. The first steam train leaves Oxenhope at 10.00 and the last service on the branch departs Keighley at 15.45 – 4 round trips in all.

Over the weekend the main service will again be 75078 hauled with the Saturday diesel locomotive train in the hands of Class 20, 20 031 for the third of the railway’s diesel days. Sunday sees a welcome return of the Vintage Trains in the relief path with ‘vintage’ stalwart, LNWR 0-6-2T ‘Coal tank’ 1054 at its head. 75078 will remain in action for the week 15th – 19th June.

KWVR introduces new Saturday Diesel Locomotive Service

Following the decision not to hold a Diesel Gala weekend during 2015, the Railway has been looking at ways to operate our diesel locomotives on duties that may prove attractive to visitors. We already use the diesel locomotives for morning duties on bank holiday weekends, some special events, and on selected Summer Saturdays, but we recognised these short early morning duties weren’t ideal for enthusiasts to attend and enjoy riding behind their favourite locomotives.

We are now pleased to confirm that a diesel locomotive hauled train will operate ALL DAY on the following Saturdays: 11th April, 9th May, 13th June, 11th July and 8th August which will operate in addition to the steam train service. Starting at 09.00 from Oxenhope, the diesel loco hauled train will replace the diesel railcar service and operate 6 round trips of the line, finishing back at Oxenhope at 17.25. A real-ale buffet car will also be provided on these trains*. In addition, normal fares will be charged. An all-day Rover ticket costing only £16 is excellent value for a full day behind your favourite locomotive.

Update – 15th march 2015

In addition it has now been announced that on Sunday 12th April D0226 will haul the 1315, 1445 and 1615 from Oxenhope and 1400, 1530 and 1700 from Keighley. On Sunday 10th May D0226 will haul the 0900, 1015 and 1145 from Oxenhope and 0940, 1100 and 1230 from Keighley.

A D8031 / 20 031 Special from the Archives

In October KWVR, archivist, Paul Brunt, gave us an insight into the past history of Midland Railway 4F 0-6-0 43924. He now turn his virtual pen to plot the comings and goings of one of the more modern members of the Worth Valley fleet, British Railways Type 1, later Class 20, Bo-Bo Diesel Electric D8031 / 20 031

As the Railways Class 20 D8031 turned 55 in December, although it did not enter service with British Railways until January 1960 I thought a pictorial look back at its life would be in order, especially as most people look to retire at this age, hopefully though this locomotive will still see many more years use. High Praise for Diesel Gala Weekend

Visiting locomotives this year were drawn from three Midlands’ railways. From the Battlefield Line at Shackerstone came Class 25, D5217, from the Great Central at Loughborough came ochre liveried Class 31, D5830 and third of the trio was Class 33, 33 035 normally resident on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway.

The visitors complemented the home fleet of Class 20 20 031, Class 25 25 059, Class 37 37 075 and 0-6-0 D0226 ‘Vulcan’ with a cameo appearance of D32, the newly restored Mersey Docks and Harbour Board 0-6-0 shunter.
