Another season of hard graft by the Railway’s gardens team has brought yet another accolade for this small band of enthusiastic, dedicated and hard working group of volunteer gardeners.
At the York Racecourse presentation ceremony on the 8th September, just like last year, the Railway lifted a coveted Gold Award at the ‘Yorkshire in Bloom’ Awards in the 8A Category – Visitor Attractions. The photograph below shows Sue Holmes collecting the award on behalf of the gardening team and the Railway. Also Oakworth came away with a Silver Gilt Award, being entered into the competition in its own right.
Railway Society Chairman, Matthew Stroh expressed his delight at this wonderful achievement “It’s a fantastic result, and great recognition for all the hard work our team of volunteers put in to make the stations look so special.”
Everyone visiting the Railway cannot help but be impressed by the gardens and hanging baskets that have adorned our stations throughout the Summer. With the Award comes a “Judges Comments” which declared, “The efforts of those working on all aspects of the railway activities and the high standards they are reaching, make the work of those involved in maintaining the grounds of the stations even more significant in the provision of the overall experience.” Click HERE to see the full citation.
Pictured in the gallery at an impromptu photo call on Sunday are Sue Holmes, Mary Clarke, David Petyt, Ken Shipley, Rebekah Ashworth and Sue Hall. In addition the team includes Alison and Margaret Lockyear, who travel from Leeds to attend to Keighley Station gardens, Stephen & Janice Laycock who look after Damems, Jason Dean who looks after Haworth and Margo Cutt who is the main gardener at Oxenhope,
To all our gardening team, we can only add, “Congratulations to the team on this magnificent achievement!”
This happy band of workers have achieved so much, but as can be seen from the citation, the judges have highlighted areas for improvement. If you think you can help, please contact David Petyt by email email@example.com or c/o Haworth Station and you will be made very welcome.
