The KWVR is pleased to announce that Great Western Railway ’49xx’ Class 4-6-0 – No. 4936 ‘Kinlet Hall’ will be our visiting locomotive for the Autumn Steam Gala taking place Friday 9th – Sunday 11th October. Passed for mainline running, 4936 will be arriving via the national network connection at Keighley, thus avoiding the current access difficulties at Ingrow.
‘Kinlet Hall’ is currently the oldest ‘Hall’ class locomotive running on the mainline network. Built in 1929, she ran 1,339,061 miles in GWR and BR service. In December 1963 the locomotive was withdrawn and sold for scrap a month later, thankfully to Woodham’s at Barry, from where she was rescued in 1979 by KHL Ltd, a small consortium of private individuals supported by an active team of volunteers. Now restored to her former glory and maintained to mainline standards, 4936 is currently resident locomotive on the West Somerset Railway and sees regular service on the 20-mile heritage line.
